JOLIET, IL — People with fast cars and a need for speed have been drag-racing along Route 6 near Rockdale for decades, at least since the 1980s. But drag racing is illegal, and it has serious consequences.

Plainfield 21-year-old Hayden Porter found himself taken away in handcuffs after Joliet police officers busted him for a drag-racing stunt this past weekend, his arrest report showed.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, on Sunday at 10:24 p.m., officers responded to a report of drag racing near Terminal Court and Channahon Road, which is more commonly known as Route 6.

Upon arrival, officers saw multiple vehicles leaving the area at a high rate of speed. During the response, English said, the officers saw a Dodge Charger traveling past them with a rear-seat passenger hanging out of the driver’s side window while recording video.

He was also cited for not wearing a seatbelt.

A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle shortly thereafter. The passenger seen hanging out the window was identified as Porter, 21, and he was placed into custody and charged with reckless conduct. He was also cited for not wearing a seatbelt.

Porter was processed at the Joliet Police Department and released on a notice to appear in court, English noted.
