JOLIET, IL — The Joliet police issued a press release on Friday revealing that 33-year-old Steven Brown was arrested in connection with Thursday evening's melee at the old Evergreen Terrace public housing projects that involved lots of gunshots.
According to police spokesman Dwayne English, at 8:46 p.m., the officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of the 300 block of North Broadway Street at the Riverwalk Homes apartment complex.
He said the responding officers encountered a large crowd gathered outside the apartment complex, with multiple fighting. Officers immediately began working to disperse the crowd and de-escalate the disturbance; however, several people continued fighting and resisted officers’ efforts to restore order.
During the incident, Steven Brown was taken into
custody after allegedly resisting officers’ attempts to place him under arrest, English indicated.
During the investigation, officers recovered spent shell casings in the area and discovered that three unoccupied vehicles and a nearby building had been struck by gunfire.
One officer sustained an injury due to a struggle with Brown; they went to a local hospital, where they were treated and later released. No other injuries were reported, English noted.
As for Brown, he was charged with aggravated resisting a peace officer. He was processed at the Joliet Police Department and later released on a Notice to Appear in court.
"This case remains under active investigation," English announced, adding that anyone with video footage or information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Joliet Police Department Investigations Division at 815-724-3020. Those wishing to remain anonymous may contact Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734 or submit a tip online at crimestoppersofwillcounty.org.
