Discarded Fireworks Ignite Blaze In Joliet: Authorities

The spent fireworks reignited, causing an overnight blaze, authorities said.

JOLIET, IL — Discarded fireworks that reignited in a garbage can caused a blaze overnight in the western Joliet area, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded around 2:15 a.m. Sunday to a fire in the 2000 block of Westmore Grove Drive, arriving in minutes to find smoke coming from an attached garage, authorities said.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and prevented it from significantly extending to the residence, according to the Joliet Fire Department.

“The preliminary investigation determined the fire was caused by spent fireworks that had been discarded into a garbage can and placed inside the garage, where they later ignited,” the department said in a news release.

The incident was under control by around 2:45 a.m., with crews on scene for about an hour, according to the department. No injuries were reported, authorities said.
