Beloved Face Of Joliet Food Scene Steps Into Chef Role At MorningStar's East Side Café

JOLIET, IL — One of Joliet's best-known faces in the restaurant industry has taken the helm in the cafe of a local nonprofit.

Tom Grotovsky–who previously led a local Great American Bagel and The Curator's Cafe—has joined MorningStar Mission as the chef at its East Side Café, the organization announced Monday.

Grotovsky brings with him four decades of experience in catering, restaurant ownership and hospitality, the organization said.

His Great American Bagel shop, The Curator's Café and company The Unforgettable Chef were "all built around bringing people together exceptional food and memorable experiences."

Outside of the kitchen, Grotovsky serves as chairman of the Joliet Arts Commission, board member of the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66, and founder of Brats, Burgers & Brews.

"I believe in teaching others what you learn and giving to others what you receive," Grotovsky said.

Supporters praised the addition of Grotovsky to the café.

"Morningstar Mission is so blessed to have the best chef in town!" one wrote on the organization's social media. "God has led him to the best place ever to use his skills as a cook and his gift of hospitality. Go get 'em Tom!"

"This is wonderful!" wrote another. "You are Amazing Tom! You are always there for others! Bless You!"

"They will have the best food," another said. "Congrats Tom."

Founded in 1909, MorningStar Mission provides food, clothing, shelter, and faith-based recovery services to people experiencing homelessness and poverty. Any person may visit its East Side Café at regularly scheduled meal times for breakfast, lunch and dinner and receive the prepared meal without cost. At least one hot meal a day is prepared, including meat, bread, starch, vegetables, and beverage.

The café offers three meals a day Monday through Saturday and breakfast and dinner on Sunday.

It is open to the public, with no regulations or restrictions.
