JOLIET, IL — Joliet's iconic Hey! Hot Dog has been at 601 Ruby St. for nearly 50 years, and regular customers know that owner B.J. Uedelhofen does not tinker with his successful menu very often, especially when it involves the hot dogs.
But this week is different. Hey! Hot Dog is running a first-time-ever special Fourth of July hot dog. It's only available this week, through July 3. The hot dog is topped with macaroni and cheese, fried onions and barbecue sauce.
And that's not the only bit of major news for Hey! Hot Dog for the month of July. Uedelhofen wanted everyone to know that his homegrown sweet corn and vegetable produce stand will be returning to the Hey! Hot Dog parking lot around July 18.
Hey! Hot Dog has been a part of Joliet since 1959, when it was on Joliet's East Cass Street. It's been here at 601 Ruby St. since 1978.
"We put some new signs on the building and business has been really good, as good as any summer," Uedelhofen remarked during a Joliet Patch interview last July. "With Portillo's down the street, thank God, we've got our customers."
If you're visiting for lunch or dinner, Hey! Hot Dog is open six days a week, from about 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday in the summer. Hey! Hot Dog is always closed on Sundays.
