During the investigation, detectives determined that approximately $400,000 had allegedly been withdrawn
without the victims' authorization and was believed to have been used to purchase a residence, English indicated.

He said the detectives also uncovered evidence indicating that additional unauthorized withdrawals had allegedly been made from the victims' financial accounts.

Following an extensive investigation that included a review of financial records, electronic communications, and other evidence, detectives identified the couple's son, Daniel Stempien, 44, Joliet, as a suspect in this case.

On July 9, 2026, detectives obtained an arrest warrant
charging Stempien with felony theft and wire fraud. Stempien was taken into custody during the afternoon of July 10, 2026, at his residence in the 100 block of North Raynor Avenue. He was transported to the Joliet Police Department for processing before being transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
