JOLIET, IL — Since last November, Joliet police have been trying to capture 26-year-old Luis Martinez-Duran and on Friday night, with the SWAT team out in full force, Joliet police captured him at the Star Inn hotel on West Jefferson Street.

According to police spokesman Dwayne English, his fellow officers determined that Martinez-Duran allegedly provided the name of a family member to an officer during a traffic stop in the 800 block of West Jefferson Street back on Nov. 1, 2025. Officers subsequently obtained an arrest warrant charging Martinez-Duran with obstructing identification.

Then came the wild encounter with Joliet police in May.

At 9:03 a.m. on May 7, officers spotted Martinez-Duran driving a Chevrolet Cruze near Cass Street and Herkimer Street. As officers tried to take him into custody for the
outstanding warrant, Martinez-Duran refused repeated commands to lower the vehicle's windows, turn off the engine and unlock the doors, English said.

"Martinez-Duran is alleged to have then accelerated away from the scene at a high rate of speed, striking a detective with the vehicle's side mirror as he fled. The detective was not injured," English conveyed.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate Martinez-Duran or the vehicle. As time passed, the detectives obtained an additional arrest warrant charging Martinez-Duran with aggravated battery to a peace officer, aggravated fleeing and
attempting to elude a peace officer and obstructing a peace officer.

Then came the arrest. It happened last Friday night.

On July 24, at approximately 7:52 p.m., tactical officers located Martinez-Duran at the Star Inn on West Jefferson Street and took him into custody without incident. He also had two additional Will County warrants for failing to appear in court on previous criminal charges.
