Box Of Wine Used To Beat Joliet Man's Head After Will County Sheriff's Left Their House: Prosecutors

JOLIET, IL — A 60-year-old Joliet woman, has emerged from the Will County Jail with her freedom after last week's petition to deny pretrial release was rejected by one of the Will County judges. Leanna Carpenter faces three counts of domestic battery.

The Will County Sheriff's Office was responsible for booking Carpenter into the jail, where she remained from July 22 to 24. She comes from the 1700 block of Parkwood Lane, which is near Manhattan Road.

According to the Will County State's Attorney's petition to deny release, on July 22, officers responded to the house in the 1720 block of Pinewood Lane in Joliet and the officers spoke to Carpenter, who got into an argument with her male roommate regarding the sexuality of his daughter. Carpenter maintained that during the argument, the man was throwing things, but nothing struck her.

Carpenter also claimed the man was drinking all day, and that affects his behavior. The officers did not see any redness or bruising to Carpenter, nor did officers observe objects within the residence to be in disarray to indicate things were thrown, police said. Carpenter reportedly refused to leave the residence.

From there, the officers spoke with Carpenter's roommate, who relayed that he and Carpenter were arguing about his daughter's sexuality, but that the argument never turned into a physical altercation. He also did not want to leave the residence and said he was going to make a sandwich and go to bed.

Then came the second police call of the night for the Will County Sheriff's Office. This one was violent and bloody.

According to prosecutors, deputies were again dispatched to the residence. On arrival for the second time, officers observed the man sitting in the garage with blood on his left hand and forearm, his ear, and the corner of his mouth.

He advised that after officers left the residence, Carpenter came out to the garage to retrieve her box of wine. Once in the garage, she then struck him in the face with the box of wine, knocking him off the chair he was sitting on, prosecutors said. From there, police allege Carpenter then got on top of him and continued to hit him. The man also said Carpenter bit him, court files show.

At the Will County Courthouse, the prosecution's argument to keep Carpenter detained was turned down. Will County Associate Judge John Pavich wrote how the "state has not met burden." The judge ordered Carpenter to stay away from the man as well as their house in the 1700 block of Pinewood, and Carpenter must maintain "absolute sobriety" from now on.

"Also, defendant is allowed to retrieve her personal items including medical equipment from the residence with police escort," the judge's order noted.
