Obituary: Robert J. Govoni

He dedicated his career to the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk, retiring after 42 years of faithful service.

Obituary was published and funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home and Crematory​.

Robert J. Govoni, age 83, of Joliet, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at Silver Cross Hospital, New Lenox. He was born on December 11, 1942, in Joliet, IL to the late Josephine (nee Barra) and Deno Govoni.

Robert was a lifelong resident of Joliet and a proud member of the community. He attended St. Patrick's Grade School and graduated from Joliet Catholic High, Class of 1960. Robert went on to graduate from Joliet Junior College.

He dedicated his career to the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk, retiring after 42 years of faithful service. Throughout his career, Robert was a passionate advocate for his fellow postal workers. He served as President of the American Postal Workers Union Local 324 for more than 30 years, and in recognition of his outstanding leadership and lasting impact, the union was renamed the Robert J. Govoni Union Local 324, in his honor. He also served for many years as Secretary of the Illinois Postal Workers Union, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues across the state.

Outside of his career, Robert found great joy on the golf course. He cherished countless rounds with his golf buddies, and was especially proud of achieving two holes-in-one during his lifetime. Robert also loved to read, and listen to his extensive music collection. He also took great pride in maintaining a beautiful yard, a reflection of his strong work ethic and attention to detail.

Above all, Robert's greatest happiness came from spending time with his family. He treasured every moment with his children and grandchildren, creating memories they will forever hold close to their hearts. His love, guidance, and unwavering devotion to his family will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Susan ( nee Hausser); his children, Debbie Govoni of Naples FL., Cheryl (Dr. Matthias) Schurhoff of Miami FL, and Dr. Robert A. (Dr. Monika) Govoni of Wilmette; his grandchildren, Dr. Nicolette Schurhoff of CT, Jenna, Alex, and Emilie Govoni of Wilmette; his sisters, Barbara (Tom) Hunter, and Elaine (Chet) Kokot of Joliet; his brother-in-law John (Peggy) Hausser of Joliet; along with several nieces and nephews; and last but not least his granddog, Benji.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Joseph Schwerha; his nephew, Chuck Schwerha; and his sister-in-law, Jackie-Lynn Chandler.

As it was Robert's request, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no services.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home in Joliet, Illinois.
