English noted that the Honda Goldwing motorcycle, driven by a 72-year-old Joliet man, was traveling southbound on South Chicago Street in the curb lane. A GMC Envoy, driven by Frederick Caldwell of Joliet was traveling southbound in the inside lane.

As both vehicles approached Fifth Avenue, it is alleged that Caldwell attempted to make a right turn onto westbound Fifth Avenue from the inside lane and struck the motorcycle. The collision caused the motorcyclist to be ejected. It is believed that the GMC then struck the motorcyclist as he was on the roadway, English pointed out.

The motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene by Joliet Fire Department paramedics before being transported to Silver Cross Hospital for further medical treatment. Caldwell was not injured.

"During the investigation, officers observed signs that Caldwell may have been under the influence of alcohol. Caldwell agreed to perform field sobriety tests and was subsequently placed into custody without incident," English announced.

Caldwell was charged with Aggravated DUI, DUI, and DUI –
BAC Over .08. He was also cited for Improper Lane Usage and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash.
