GARDNER, IL — One of the biggest stories in Illinois over the past few days has been the mysterious escape involving the serval cat that vanished from someone's property near the tiny town of Reddick, which only has about 100 people.

A serval is a wild cat native to Africa, recognizable by its long legs, large ears and spotted coat. The slender cats are considerably larger than typical house cats and are known for their ability to leap high into the air while hunting.

Was the serval on his way to Joliet? Would he wind up at the Joliet Park District Inwood Golf Course or maybe make his way over to the Chicagoland Speedway?

The answer to all those questions is no.

On Monday, the Grundy County Animal Control shared out two photos showing that the serval has been caged.

"We did it. The serval that has been roaming the Gardner area has been caught," the joyful Facebook post read. "Our officers assisted by the owner and a very helpful resident. Thank you again to everyone that reported a sighting. This handsome fella will be home safe and sound with his family soon."
