JOLIET, IL — A 20-year-old from the Plainfield and Shorewood area of Joliet, Lawon Sterrett, has regained his freedom after spending a few days in the Will County Jail following his Joliet police arrest at the Riverwalk Homes public housing apartment buildings where lots of shootings have taken place this summer.
According to his criminal complaint, Sterrett has been charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and obstruction of a peace officer.
On Aug. 14, the complaint outlined, "Sterrett knowingly possessed on or about his person a firearm, a black Glock 30, Gen 4, upon a public street, to wit: near 308 Western Avenue, Joliet in Will County, Illinois, at a time when he was not on his land or in his abode, legal dwelling, or fixed place of business, or on the land or in the legal dwelling of another person as an invitee with that person's permission, and the firearm possessed was uncased, loaded, and Immediately accessible at the time of the offense and he has not been issued a currently valid license under the Firearm Concealed Carry Act."
The second count indicates that "said defendant knowingly possessed on or about his person a firearm, a black Glock 19, Gen 5, upon a public street, to wit: near 311 N. Bluff, Joliet in Will County, Illinois ... and he has not been issued a currently valid license under the Firearm Concealed Carry Act."
The third and final charge indicates that "defendant knowingly obstructed the performance of Joliet Police Officer M. Taller #156 of an authorized act within his official capacity, being in the process of investigating, knowing Joliet Police Officer M. Taller #156 to be a peace officer engaged in the execution of his official duties, in that said defendant fled on foot from Officer M. Taller."
After being arrested at 311 North Bluff Street, Sterrett was later set free from the Will County Jail following his weekend hearing before a judge. The judge's order indicates that Sterrett was not charged with a detainable offense under the SAFE-T-Act.
Sterrett comes from the 1700 block of Brighton Lane, which is off Theodore Street past Route 59.
