Mattresses Are Turning Up All Over Joliet, City Councilmen Joe Clement, Juan Moreno Notify Chief Rob Brown

JOLIET, IL — Joliet City Councilman Joe Clement has made it known of his intentions to possibly run for mayor of Joliet next spring, and at Monday night's meeting, he brought up a safety issue to the attention of Joliet's new permanent chief of police, Rob Brown.

"Chief Brown, thank you for taking care of that abandoned car," Clement began his remarks, "And then can we contact the Forest Preserve over by the Will County Health Department? There's preserves over there. Our street department took a mattress out of there. We had residents, they were calling me ... and there are people over there sleeping on the trails. So maybe they make their way through there and that's where they pulled the mattress from."

During the discussion, Councilwoman Suzanna Ibarra explained that the area is part of the Wauponsee Glacial Trail, the trail goes from Rowell Avenue on Joliet's east side all the way to Custer Park, about 23 miles away.

"The Wauponsee Trail ... they're dragging furniture and mattresses out there," Ibarra agreed.

Clement wanted everyone to know that the city street department took away the mattress found near the Will Count Health Department section of the bicycle and walking trail "and if we just contact them, to have them help us out," Clement said, of the Forest Preserve Police agency.

And that was not the end of the discussion. Councilman Juan Moreno had another property on his mind, 3000 W. Jefferson St., the Joliet Park District's Inwood Athletic Center, which includes an 18-hole golf course.

"Now that you bring back that one up," Moreno began, "hey, Chief Brown, Joliet Police Department patrols Joliet Park District, like, for example, Inwood, right? They got a mattress out there as well. I was there ... I definitely do believe we should have some patrols through the park, whether we do or not, I was there Sunday ... we need to get down there, but yeah, there's a mattress down there. It just makes the area look a little bad."
