JOLIET, IL — the continued closure of essential healthcare services at St. Joseph Medical Center, including obstetrics and gynecology, labor and delivery, pediatrics, psychiatric care, and other vital departments is a devastating loss for the residents of Joliet and our surrounding communities. These are not simply administrative decisions they're decisions that will have a direct impact on the health, safety, and well-being of thousands of families.

When expectant mothers must travel farther to deliver their babies, when children lose access to nearby pediatric care, and when individuals experiencing a mental health crisis have fewer treatment options, every mile traveled, every delayed diagnosis, and every extended wait for care can have life-altering consequences. This is also a public safety issue. As essential hospital services disappear, neighboring hospitals, emergency departments, ambulance services, firefighters, police officers, and other first responders are left to absorb the increased demand. I have witnessed these challenges firsthand. When my father suffered a serious heart-related medical emergency, he waited more than 12 hours to receive the care he needed at another regional hospital due to the strain. This was horrific for our family.

No family should have to endure that kind of delay during a medical emergency. As more services are eliminated from hospitals in our community, the burden on healthcare facilities will continue to grow. resulting in even longer wait times, overcrowded emergency departments, and increased pressure on the very doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who are working tirelessly to care for their patients. At some point, difficult decisions stop looking like unavoidable circumstances and begin looking like choices about priorities. From my perspective, when financial considerations outweigh the health and well-being of our communities, we must ask the difficult questions. Our residents deserve a healthcare system that puts patients before profits. A strong city depends on a strong healthcare system. Access to quality medical care is fundamental to public health, public safety, economic stability, and the quality of life every resident deserves. I urge hospital leadership, state officials, healthcare providers, and community partners to work together to identify sustainable solutions that protect and restore critical healthcare services in Joliet. The health and safety of our residents must always come before the reduction of essential healthcare services.

My record speaks for itself. Throughout my service on the Joliet City Council, I have fought for the people of District 5 and for every resident of our city. The people of Joliet deserve a healthcare system that puts patients first, protects our families, and ensures that quality care remains available close to home. I will continue working to make sure their voices are heard and their needs remain the priority.
