JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Drama Guild is proud to present La Gringa, a Spanish-language production by playwright Carmen Rivera, coming to the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre this upcoming weekend in September.
Presented entirely in Spanish, La Gringa explores identity, family, culture, language, and the experience of living between two worlds. Through humor, conflict, and deeply personal
moments, the play follows a young Puerto Rican woman returning to her family's homeland after growing up in the United States, forcing her to confront questions of where she belongs and what it means to be caught between cultures.
For the Joliet Drama Guild, this production represents an important milestone: La Gringa is being presented as the first Spanish-language play in Joliet.
"This production is about much more than language," said director Samantha Ante. "It is about identity, belonging, family, and the feeling of sometimes being caught between two cultures. There are so many people who understand that experience, whether they are immigrants, children of immigrants, or anyone who has ever felt like they don't completely belong in one place or another."
The production features a diverse cast of actors, including "María" Diana Arce, "Norma" Reyna Méndez, "Manolo" Luis Manuel Antonio Rodríguez, "Víctor" Benjamín "Benji" Gaspar, "Iris" Elisabeth Chiguichón, and "Monchi" José Francisco Michael Rodríguez Grimaldo.
For several members of the cast, La Gringa marks their first theatrical production, making the show an especially meaningful opportunity for emerging performers to discover their voices on stage.
The production team includes Stage Manager Rubi, Set Builders Brett and Daniel, and Costumes and Props by Christa.
Directed by Samantha Ante, the production aims to create an authentic and welcoming theatrical experience while highlighting the richness of Spanish-language theater and the stories of communities whose experiences are not always represented on local stages.
"Spanish-language theater deserves a place in our community," said Ante. "We hope audiences who see themselves in this story feel represented, while audiences who may not share the same experience walk away with a greater understanding of what it means to live between cultures."
