HAMMOND, IN — A Joliet man is charged with killing a woman he was in a relationship with at a Walmart where she worked in northwest Indiana, according to police.
Dorian Kevon Robertson, 22, is charged with murder in the repeated and fatal shooting of 21-year-old Dakota Norwood of Chicago, police said Wednesday.
Law enforcement had responded shortly after 9 a.m. Monday to the business in the 1100 block of Fifth Avenue after an off-duty Hammond police officer working store security reported that a shooting had occurred and a person was in custody, authorities said.
Robertson had been speaking with Norwood when the encounter escalated to a physical altercation, according to police, who said the man retrieved a gun and shot the victim repeatedly.
"Investigators determined that Norwood and the suspect knew each other and had been involved in a relationship," police said in a social media post. "The exact nature and length of that relationship remains under investigation."
Roberston was taken to Lake County Jail, according to police.
