Attack on Will County Treasurer's Website Nothing More Than Cyber 'Graffiti' -- Official
The spokesman for the Will County Treasurer said residents' personal information was not at risk.

A cyber attack on the Will County Treasurer’s website amounted to little more than childish vandalism, an office spokesman said.
“Really and truly, we were graffitied,” said Brian McDaniel, the treasurer’s chief investment officer.
McDaniel said office staff “started noticing issues Thursday” on the site willcountytaxbill.com. The treasurer runs that site — which is used by residents to pay property tax bills — as well as its general site, willcountytreasurer.com.

Over the weekend, a hacker was able to get into the tax bill site and post the message, “fingering a girl while sleeping then her waking up.”
McDaniel said staff decided to shut down the tax bill site. Users attempting to access it were redirected to the treasurer’s main site.

The treasurer’s website is among the most heavily trafficked among those for county officials, McDaniel said, and there are hundreds of attempts to illicitly gain access to it each day. But he noted the sites do not hold any personal taxpayer information and that no one was at risk for identity theft.
“Customers are not paying (their property taxes) using our system,” McDaniel said, calling the cyber attack a “little bit of an inconvenience.”
