2 Injured In Back-To-Back Crashes On I-55 Near Joliet, Police Say

Both crashes involved commercial vehicles, state police said.

JOLIET, IL — Several people were injured Tuesday morning in back-to-back crashes on Interstate 55 around Joliet, according to authorities.

The first occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m. on southbound I-55, north of Route 52, state police said. A commercial vehicle was involved in a rollover and one person was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police. The roadway reopened about two hours later, the Illinois Department of Transportation tweeted.

The second crash occurred in the backup from the first incident on the southbound interstate at Route 30, according to the department. About 9:30 a.m., a passenger vehicle rear-ended a commercial vehicle and a person was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said. Southbound I-55 was closed, with traffic diverted at Route 30, but had fully reopened by 11 a.m., according to police.
