Joliet Patch Editor John Ferak has had a taste for a gyros sandwich of late. The good news, there's plenty of great spots near Joliet.

JOLIET, IL — People are always remarking on Brian Bessler's Joliet Facebook page for restaurants and bars about their favorite places for serving pizza, chicken wings, hamburgers, hotdogs and tacos, but one great tasting sandwich flies under the radar. I'm talking about the gyros.

In my opinion, the gyros is one of the most underrated meals around. I love a good gyros, but at the same time, when I run out for a meal, the gyros seems to slide down on my list of possibilities.

Over the past month, I'm pleased to report, I have had two excellent gyros sandwiches at different Joliet-area restaurants. If you're in the mood for great tasting gyros, I would strongly urge you to patronize the SubDock restaurant at 923 West Jefferson Street.

And if you can't make it to SubDock, another great gyros sandwich is made at the Mickey's Gyros in the Hillcrest Shopping Center at 1701 North Larkin Ave. in Crest Hill.

Both restaurants focus on carryout orders. Mickey's has a drive-thru while SubDock does not. However, I can tell you that the Sub Dock service is fast. I stopped at the SubDock recently and placed my order at 12:29 p.m. My takeout order was ready at 12:32 p.m.

And SubDock has quite a following. There were several people coming and going from the restaurant as I ate my gyros outside in the parking lot, enjoying the beautiful weather we've been having of late.

The SubDock gyros, as you can hopefully tell from my photo at the top of this food column, was loaded with plenty of thinly sliced meat. For the unfamiliar, the Gyros sandwich originates from Greece and it's made with pita bread and usually done in America with lamb meat.

I'm not a huge fan of tomatoes on my hamburgers, but when it comes to gyros, I love them. Of course, the best thing about eating a gyros is the creamy Tzatziki sauce, which is made from cucumbers.

Just writing this food column is making me hungry for another gyros sandwich at Sub Dock or Mickey's.

What about you? Do you consider the gyros at SubDock the best in Joliet? Do you prefer the one at Mickey's on Larkin Avenue?

Do you know of another Joliet-area restaurant that serves a delicious-tasting gyros? Feel free to include your comments at the bottom of this article or post them on our Facebook page.
