The Joliet Public Library will host receptions for Artist in Residence Gabriel Magaña Esquivel, where visitors can view his exhibit, “Here and Be Where to See,” meet the artist and learn more about his work.The library will host the events from 6-8 p.m. July 21 and 22 in the Digital Media Studio (DMS) on the lower level of the library’s Ottawa Street Branch, 150 N. Ottawa St. Esquivel will give an interactive lecture in English on July 21 and in Spanish on July 22. The receptions are free and open to the public. Esquivel learned about the DMS when he attended a library club there. He returned to the studio to learn more about photography and digitizing his artwork from library staff.“Gabriel’s experience is a great example of how community members can use the Digital Media Studio to develop creative skills and bring their ideas to life,” said Kyle Eddy, DMS Associate. “Whether someone is interested in art, photography, podcasting or graphic design, we have the resources and we’re here to help.” Esquivel’s art is inspired by his personal journey to understand himself and the world, and explores concepts of philosophy, psychology and spirituality. “I want people to feel curiosity, wonder and a deeper awareness of themselves,” Esquivel said. “I’m interested in the idea that we don’t see the world simply as it is, we see it as we are. The Hearts of Zagreb will provide the music and dance for a Croation Folklore Dance performance, from 2 -4 p.m. Thursday, July 23 at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River Road. Kona Ice will be onsite from noon to 3 p.m. serving shaved ice. The concert is free and open to the public. 

Running through July, the summer concert series features a broad spectrum of live music and performances spanning classic rock, traditional polkas, big band orchestra, and global folklore dance. 

Hearts of Zagreb is a cultural association based in Zagreb, Croatia, which was founded in 2016. The organization consists of dancers and musicians who perform programs representing regions of Croatia, including Hrvatsko zagorje, Posavina, Prigorje, Podravina, Slavonija, and Bilogora. The performers wear costumes from these regions and accompany their choreography with instruments, such as the tambura.

Because this specific program features regional dance choreography, the performance will be hosted inside the main Ballroom at the Timbers. Other events in the summer concert series are primarily hosted outdoors on the patio, offering neighborhood families, seniors, and music enthusiasts an open-air venue.

“We are so excited to welcome the Hearts of Zagreb all the way from Croatia to perform for our community,” said Sheila Albor, director of marketing at The Timbers of Shorewood. “This is a wonderful opportunity to experience authentic international music and dance while enjoying a cool treat from the Kona Ice truck. We also encourage our guests to bring new or gently used shoes to donate to our Alzheimer’s Association Shoe Drive.”

Lake Chaminwood Preserve

Tweak your paddling technique at a Paddle Skills Refresher program being offered by the <a href="https://www.reconnectwithnature.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Forest Preserve District of Will County</a> at Lake Chaminwood Preserve. The program is set for 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 24. Registration is required by Thursday, July 23: 815-722-9470. The cost is $35 per person and the program is for ages 18 or older.&nbsp; The program is taught by American Canoe Association-certified instructors who will help you fine tune basic strokes and improve your overall form.&nbsp;Previous kayaking experience is required as instruction will focus on advancing existing paddling skills. Be sure to wear shoes and clothes that can get wet, and don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a water bottle.&nbsp;

The Will County Children's Advocacy Center was founded in 1995 by State's Attorney James Glasgow to partner with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) comprised of law enforcement, DCFS investigators, medical personnel, prosecutors, and Will County CAC forensic interviewers, family advocates, and trauma therapists in response to reports of severe physical abuse, sexual abuse, commercial exploitation, neglect, and exposure to violence of children, in Will County, IL. Our Will County CAC intake/MDT coordinator, forensic interviewers, family advocates, and trauma therapists provide the following services: * Forensic Interviews: After a child is referred to the Will County CAC by law enforcement or the IL Dept. of Family Services (DCFS), our Intake Coordinator schedules a forensic interview for the child. One of our 4 forensic interviewers listens to the child’s story and asks non-leading, developmentally-appropriate questions as the child talks about the trauma he/she has experienced. Law enforcement, prosecution, DCFS, and mental health professionals observe the interview from a separate room. This reduces trauma for the child and provides a stronger foundation if the case goes to court. * Family Advocacy: Our family advocates are committed to helping each family navigate the complex systems that a family enters when a child makes an outcry of abuse. As each case goes through the investigation, prosecution and healing process, the team is there to help the family understand the process, learn about their rights and successfully access resources that will help their family during crisis. * Trauma-Focused Therapy: Our team of licensed clinical social workers provide short-term, trauma informed therapy to children who have received a forensic interview. Since child abuse affects the whole family, the services are available at no cost to both the child and their non-offending family members. Individual and group therapy is offered in English and Spanish.
