Carl Sandburg Elementary School Hosts the Joliet Arbor Day Celebration
Student Arbor Day Poster Winners Recognized
Carl Sandburg Elementary School hosted a tree planting ceremony for the City of Joliet’s Arbor Day Celebration on April 26, 2024. Joliet City Councilwoman Sherri Reardon, Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, and members of the Joliet Tree Advisory Board joined Sandburg Principal Dr. Shawn Olson at the event. Second grade students recited a poem, student winners of the city’s Arbor Day Poster contest were announcement, and students helped plant the two new Redpointe Maple trees that were planted in front of the school on Lilac Lane. Seedlings were distributed to students in Kindergarten, first, and second grades to encourage planting the trees at their homes to beautify the community.
The winners of the Arbor Day Poster Contest were second-grade students Alora Calderon (first place), Olga Oslin (second place), Selena Salgado (third place), and Cayden Greene received honorable mention. These students were also recognized at the Joliet City Council Meeting in April. The City of Joliet was recently recognized as a “Tree City USA” for the 33rd consecutive year by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
