Caterpillar's Mexico Move Means Lots More Joliet Job Losses

WJOL broke news of the upcoming layoffs in a story on Thursday afternoon.

JOLIET, IL - Joliet's Caterpillar plant, which is a shell of what it once was, will be slashing another 285 jobs over the next six months, several news outlets reported Thursday. WJOL reported that Caterpillar will get rid of 285 workers in Joliet between January and next June.

"Employees were first notified of the layoffs on November 7th. In 2015 Caterpillar announced that it was beginning the process of shifting jobs from the Joliet plant to a facility in Monterrey, Mexico," WJOL news radio AM-1340 reported.

Crain's Chicago Businss published a story headlined "Caterpillar To Cut More Jobs In Joliet."

The Crain's article noted that the Joliet plant Caterpillar had announced in 2015 that it would be moving production work away from Joliet to Monterrey, Mexico, and that it in doing so, it would be slashing 230 jobs of the 770 people still employed there.

Back in the 1970s, the Joliet Caterpillar plant employed nearly 7,000 people, Crain's noted.
