Condition of Baby Found in Hot Car Improving

The 7-month-old baby boy found Tuesday after being in a hot car for two hours is out of critical condition and doing well, according to Joliet Deputy Chief of Investigations Alan Roechner.

The baby was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center Tuesday where he was listed in critical condition. Roechner said the hospital expects the baby to recover with no lasting injuries.

“I got a call this morning from the hospital,” Roechner said. “The baby’s doing much better from yesterday. He got a lot of fluids and they don’t think there’ll be any lasting effects on the child.”

The child was left in the car at around 10 a.m. Tuesday. The baby’s mother had dropped off her children and boyfriend at her house and believed her boyfriend had gotten the infant out of the car, according to police.

The mother went to a meeting at a local title company and was unaware the baby was still in the car.

“While she was at the meeting, she received several phone calls from the boyfriend,” Roechner said. ”She was unable to answer due to the fact that she was in the meeting. At noon when she left the meeting, she listened to the messages and realized the child wasn’t with the father.”

The woman ran out to her vehicle and found the child unresponsive. She removed the child and contacted a parking enforcement officer in the area who called police.

An official with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office said the case is being reviewed and no charges have been filed. The Department of Child and Family Services said the incident is being investigated and the family has no prior history with the agency.
