Convicted Murderer Took Nurse, Cop Hostage at Presence St. Joseph: Police
Early Wednesday, IDOC inmate Joshua L. Matthews, 32, allegedly held a nurse's assistant and correctional officer hostage at St. Joe's.

JOLIET, IL — Police are investigating a hostage situation that took place at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet early Wednesday morning. Joshua Matthews, 32, who is serving a 100 year-sentence for a 2004 murder, was transferred from Stateville Correctional Center to the hospital for medical care Tuesday. Police said he took certified nurse's assistant and corrections officer hostage shortly after he arrived.
According to The Herald-News, Matthews brandished what appeared to be a weapon and told a nurse’s assistant and correctional officer he was holding them hostage. IDOC worked with hospital security to defuse the situation before the Joliet Police Department arrived to provide backup.
Fox Illinois News Team reports that a representative from IDOC said the hostage situation at Presence St. Joseph was resolved in less than an hour and that there were no injuries reported.
