JOLIET, IL — On April 2, the voters of Joliet opted to re-elect four incumbents and one newcomer to the city council: Sherri Reardon. Upon taking office, her first objective was to get rid of Marty Shanahan as city manager. Her latest order of business is to raise the city of Joliet's fuel tax. The added tax burden on the citizens of Joliet would go toward the purchasing of several shiny new vehicles for the city's public works division and police department.

Last week's Joliet Patch article didn't go over well with local readers. A number of people were downright angry with Reardon's initiative of raising the city's fuel taxes. Here's just a small sampling of their reaction to Reardon's idea:

  • "Yes I voted for her not knowing she is a member of the Good Ole Boys team how sad."
  • "I don't know how these people get into office but I sure as heck didn't vote for them. From seeing my property taxes more than double in the last 20 years and then seeing how much in pensions and benefits the city workers get makes me want to vomit."
  • "How bout cutting some of the spending and obscene government salaries?"
  • "This state is taxing its residents into the poor house! I may have left the state but i have important ties to Joliet! The taxes here are choking the life out of everyone!"

At the time of the April 2 election, Sherri Reardon's campaign had not filed its campaign contributions and expenses, but those documents are now available for inspection. It just so happens one of Joliet's most prolific auto dealers, Terry D'Arcy, dealer principal at D'Arcy Buick GMC on Essington Road, was one of Reardon's large campaign donors.

If Reardon's fuel tax materializes, it's quite possible Joliet would purchase several new trucks from D'Arcy motors.

Reardon also got a large contribution from the group affiliated with NorthPointe, the enormous warehouse development that met a fierce outcry of opposition when it proposed locating near Elwood. The NorthPointe group goes by the name East Gate Logistics Park.

Her largest donation so far comes back to Kirk Reeves of Reeves Trucking. His company is listed as a freight-shipping company located on Joliet's Westridge Road.
