JOLIET, IL — While 52-year-old Danny Rios chatted with patrons as he tended Izzy's Bar on Theodore Street, the man who would kill him hours later, Pat Gleason, attended the March 8, 2018, REO Speedwagon concert at Rialto's Square Theatre, according to Joliet police reports.

"I asked him what concert he was at, and he stated he went to the Rialto and saw REO Speedwagon," Gleason told Joliet police detectives Marc Reid and Shawn Filipiak from his hospital bed at Loyola Hospital in Maywood on March 9, 2018, Reid's police report showed.

"I asked him what happened after the concert, and he stated he went home. I asked him if went straight home and he stated straight home. I asked him if he made any stops between the concert and home, and he stated not that he was aware of," Reid wrote pertaining to their interview with Gleason. "I asked him if he had any drinks at the concert. He stated he had a big bottle of Crown Royal. When asked if he was drunk, he stated yeah. When asked if he remembered anything when he got home, he stated he didn't think he made it home because he was there."

According to his report, Detective Reid informed Gleason that he was not involved in a crash. Gleason went to the bar, got into a fight and killed a man. "I killed a man?" Gleason asked.

When Reid pressed Gleason for details surrounding the killing, Gleason responded that he did not have any, he had blacked out.

At that point, Detective Filipiak asked Gleason if he was a carry concealed holder and Gleason answered yes. Gleason said he usually carries a Smith & Wesson that was two-toned. "I asked him what caliber and he stated 40 caliber," Reid wrote. "We asked him if he had his gun with him last night and he stated, no, he couldn't have. He stated they check for guns at the concert.

"We advised him that at some point he must have gotten his gun because he shot and killed a man last night," Reid noted.

"Oh my God!," Gleason responded, according to Reid's report of the tape-recorded interview.

When Reid and Filipiak told Gleason that two people inside the bar subdued him, Gleason said he did not recall any of that.

"He kept saying, 'Oh my God,'" Reid's report reflected. "He stated he couldn't remember anything because he was drunk. He stated he usually doesn't drink."

Gleason remembered going to the REO Speedwagon concert at 8 p.m. but he was not sure when it finished. "He stated all he remembers was heading home but doesn't remember getting home," Reid wrote. "We asked him how much Crown Royal he drank and he stated they make two types of bottles and he had the big bottle ... Gleason stated he brought his own bottle and snuck it in his coat. He stated he went to the concert by himself."

At that point, Reid and Filipiak suspected Gleason was not being truthful.

"We confronted him about having two tickets in his coat and he stated there was no way that he had two tickets," Reid wrote. "We asked him what his girlfriend's name was and he stated he didn't have a girlfriend. We asked him who was the girl spending the night at his house. He stated he didn't know."

Eventually, Reid turned the conversation to Izzy's Bar on Theodore Street, inquiring whether Gleason had been to the bar before. "He stated a long time. He stated it was probably 10 years ago," Reid noted. "He stated he didn't drink much because he injured his back in 2009 and the doctors told him not to drink. He stated he is on pain pills ... he stated OxyCodone."

At that point, Detective Filipiak asked if Gleason was drinking Crown Royal and Coke at the Rialto show, and that's when Gleason disagreed. "Wait a minute, I didn't say Coke," Gleason responded.

Reid asked Gleason what he was drinking with the Crown Royal and he responded RC Cola.

As the interview continued, Reid told Gleason that a woman named Jill "was at his house and if he remembered going to the concert with her and he stated, 'I don't know what happened.'"

Reid informed Gleason that the Joliet police had seized his vehicle and the detectives were in the process of obtaining search warrants for the car and his house on Dearborn Street.

"Detective Filipiak advised him that he was in custody and that he walked into Izzy's and killed a man with his two-tone 40-caliber Smith & Wesson," Reid wrote.

That interview ended at 12:52 p.m. on March 9, 2018, the afternoon following the killing.

On Tuesday, Joliet Patch broke the news that Gleason's criminal defense lawyer, Jeff Tomczak, has asked Will County Judge Dave Carlson to suppress all of his client's interviews with Reid and Filipiak, arguing that Gleason's incriminating statements were not made voluntarily.

Patch reported that Gleason also gave the following spontaneous statements to Reid and Filipiak while hospitalized at Loyola in Maywood, according to their Joliet police reports:

  • "I've never shot anyone before. I've never killed anyone before."
  • "I feel really bad about killing that guy."
  • "My blood pleasure medication is at home, I shot some dude."
  • "Have to move out of my house, no one likes a murderer."
  • "How many guys did I shoot, two? On TV it said the bartender tried stepping in."
