Donald John Larson
Retired Agricultural Engineer and former Troy 30-C School Board of Education member

Donald J. Larson
born June 22, 1930, to John and Alberta Larson in Crown Point, Indiana. He passed away surrounded by family on October 1, 2023 at the Bickford of Gurnee.
Don is survived by his two daughters, Renee Kemph (Tom) and Jana Smith (Brian), and was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years (Janet Larson), daughter Sheryl (Hank Kinzie) and sister Carole, (Philip Nine). Don also is survived by a brother (Gerald Larson) and sister (Diane Pate).
Don spent his early years working on his grandfather’s farm in Lowell, Indiana, which led him to pursue his Agricultural Engineering degree at Purdue University. He graduated in 1952 and immediately started his 37 year career at Caterpillar Inc. in Joliet, Illinois. He was a registered professional engineer in Illinois, and served in all offices of the Joliet Chapter of ISPE.

Don was very active in his local community. He served nine years on the Troy 30 – C school board of education (three as president) and was a generous contributor to his church, our Savior Lutheran Church in Joliet, Illinois.
Don loved to play bridge with friends, ride his bike (up until the age of 91), fix anything broken, and to keep a straight face when his wife and daughters had fits of giggles at the dinner table. He also loved spending time with his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

As per Don’s wishes, he was cremated. His ashes will be combined with his wife’s and placed in a burial at Woodlawn Memorial in Joliet, where a private family memorial will be held.
Don was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who will be greatly missed.
