Driver Who Hit 2 I-80 Workers In Joliet No Longer In Jail

Gary Rollins spent about two days in the Will County Adult Detention Facility before post bail.

JOLIET, IL - A man from Florida who struck a digital sign board along Interstate 80 in Joliet as well as two construction workers last Thursday is no longer in custody at the Will County jail. Booking records show that 36-year-old Gary Rollins posted $5,000 in bail, or 10 percent of his $50,000 bond, to go free pending trial. Rollins had spent two days in jail. He lives in Crystal River, Florida.

In connection with the crash, Rollins has been charged in Will County Circuit Court with two felony counts of reckless driving bodily harm, plus several traffic violations. According to Illinois State Police, Rollins had been distracted by his cell phone shortly before midnight, causing him to lose control of his 1996 Ford F-350. He was driving westbound on Interstate 80 near Briggs Street as overnight construction work was occurring along the busy interstate.

One of the injured workers was being treated on Friday at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet in stable condition with serious injuries while the second worker was treated and released.
