Drunk Joliet Jeep Driver Crashes Into Pole On Raynor Ave: JPD

Jonathan Hernandez, 23, lost control of the Jeep Cherokee and it left the roadway and struck a light pole near Farragut Place, police said.

JOLIET, IL — A 23-year-old Joliet man, who Joliet police say crashed into a light pole on Raynor Avenue despite having no valid driver's license, now faces felony DUI charges. Jonathan Hernandez's crash happened around 2:40 a.m. Sunday, in the 400 block of North Raynor Avenue.

After being discharged from St. Joe's hospital, Hernandez was put in handcuffs and delivered to the Will County Jail, facing two charges of aggravated DUI, DUI and DUI-BAC over .08.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, the following events led to the arrest:

  • Hernandez was southbound on Raynor Avenue in a Jeep Cherokee at a high rate of speed. Hernandez lost control and the Jeep left the roadway and struck a light pole on the west side of the street near Farragut Place.
  • The collision caused the Jeep to roll on the driver’s side. At the crash site, Hernandez exhibited signs of alcohol impairment. The Joliet Fire Department ambulance took Hernandez to St. Joe's hospital for treatment of minor injuries from the crash.
  • Hernandez was also cited for having no valid driver’s License, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. His Jeep was towed from the scene.

Will County Jail records indicate Hernandez was let out of custody around 5:40 p.m. Monday after posting 10 percent of his $3,000 bail.

Hernandez lives in the apartment units in the 900 block of John Street, which isn't that far from the site of his overnight wreck.
