Evergreen Terrace Residents Tell of Finding Butchered Body, Brush With Alleged Killer
One woman told of discovering the body and another recalled a brief conversation with a man she believes to be the alleged killer.

Stephanie Gaines was taking her children to school when she walked by the laundry room of her Evergreen Terrace apartment building Wednesday morning. She’ll never forget what she saw there.
The walls were covered with blood, Gaines said, and there was a dead woman in the room.
“I just ran because it was just scary,” Gaines said, telling how she had “never seen anything like this ever in my life.”

“There was a whole bunch of blood all over the floor and the walls, everything,” she said.
Gaines went to her friend Toinette Platt for help. Platt called the police.

The slain woman was identified as 20-year-old Joslyn Woods of Joliet. She did not live at Evergreen Terrace and it was not known by police on Wednesday what she was doing there.
And Platt believes she ran into 35-year-old Drumaine McKinley—the man police charged with killing the young woman in the laundry room. She said the man seemed nervous and tried to bum a cigarette off her.
“He was looking for squares and he was anxious and everything,” said Platt, recalling how the man noticed her reach for the box-cutter she was carrying.
Gaines was left shaken by the horrifying scene in the laundry room and feels unsafe in her apartment. She said she will make sure to lock her door and “put a chair under” the doorknob.
