Ex-Con Gets 40 Years For Killing His 90-Year-old Grandmother
The Joliet man murdered his grandmother the day after he got out of prison.

A Joliet ex-convict was sentenced to 40 years behind bars for murdering the grandmother who allowed him to live with her after the last time he got out of prison.
Darel Agerton, 41, pleaded guilty to murdering his 90-year-old grandmother, Veronica Schick.
Agerton was just one day out of prison when he killed Schick in November 2012. Agerton had finished up serving 15 months for his fourth driving under the influence conviction. He went from prison to live with his grandmother in her house on Jessie Street.

Agerton told emergency responders he woke from a nap to find his grandmother unresponsive on the floor, the sheriff’s department said at the time. But when questioned by detectives, Agerton changed his story, the department said.
Agerton battered and strangled Schick.

Agerton has been held at the Will County jail for more than two years.
