Aurora Cousins Sentenced in Terrorist Plot To Attack Joliet Armory: UPDATED

Ex-National Guardsman handed 30-year prison sentence for his role in "dastardly" plot.

The ex-National Guard specialist accused of plotting with his cousin to kill dozens of guardsmen at the Joliet Armory received a 30-year prison term during a sentencing hearing on Tuesday.

Hasan Edmonds, 23, pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiring to and attempting to provide material support and resources to a terrorist group in December. Edmonds was arrested in March 2015 as he tried to board a plane for a planned trip to the Middle East, where he intended to join Islamic terrorists.

According to the plot, his cousin, 30-year-old Jonas Edmonds, was going to wear one of Hasan’s uniforms and sneak into the armory and massacre as many guardsmen as possible.

Jonas Edmonds was handed a 21-year prison sentence earlier in the day. The younger cousin claimed to have been radicalized by Jonas as they hatched their plot, federal prosecutors said.

Both cousins are from Aurora. Federal prosecutors said Hasan Edmonds’ role in the “dastardly plot” qualified him to receive 30 years in a federal prison -- which was the sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge John Lee, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

In a sentencing memorandum shared by the Sun-Times, federal prosecutors wrote that “(Hasan Edmonds) betrayed both his word and his country by plotting to kill his fellow soldiers on behalf of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Had this scheme succeeded, we would have been left to mourn yet more victims of ideological terrorism.”

The feds said that Hasan Edmonds provided information about the layout and took his cousin on a scouting expedition of Joliet Armory. He also gave his cousin one of his old guardsman uniforms.

Earlier Tuesday, the Aurora cousin was handed a 21-year prison sentence for his role in the foiled attack on the Joliet Armory during his sentencing hearing on Tuesday.

Jonas Edmonds, 30, of Aurora, pleaded guilty last December to conspiring to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State and making false statements regarding international terrorism.

Edmonds, who along with his cousin, Hasan Edmonds, 23, also of Aurora, allegedly plotted to shoot up the Illinois National Guard Armory in Joliet. The Aurora men were arrested in March 2015 after Jonas Edmonds had dropped off his younger cousin, Hasan, at Midway Airport for a planned trip to the Middle East to join ISIS forces.

The younger cousin, Hasan, had trained at the armory with the Illinois National Guard. Jonas Edmonds was going to attack the armory while wearing his cousin’s uniform from when he served with the 634th Brigade Support Battalion.

Federal prosecutors had called for a 21-year prison sentence for Jonas Edmonds, which was granted by U.S. District Judge John Lee.

Hasan Edmonds is expected to be sentenced later Tuesday afternoon, according to the Chicago Tribune. Federal prosecutors are asking for a 31-year sentence for the former Illinois National Guard member. He, too, has pled guilty to terrorist charges.

"Betraying one's country while in its service is a particularly grave crime," said a recent court filing.
