The 22-year-old Joliet man held down his girlfriend and sexually assaulted her, according to police.

JOLIET, IL - Gregory McCulloh of Joliet is locked up at the Will County Adult Detention Facility after being arrested Thursday on charges of committing rape. McCulloh, of the 900 block of Lois Place, was booked into the county jail Thursday afternoon. He has been charged with criminal sexual assault involving force. The crime occurred in the apartment building McCulloh lived, according to Joliet police.

Around 7:30 a.m. that morning, Joliet officers responded to the apartment building in reference to a sexual assault that had occurred shortly before midnight. According to police, McCulloh's 23-year-old girlfriend refused his demands to have sex. That's when McCulloh grabbed the young woman and held her down and forced himself onto her, having non-consensual sexual intercourse, police said.

The woman was unable to escape the apartment until Thursday morning, police said, and that's when she notified police that she had been raped. A Joliet Fire Department ambulance responded to the scene and the woman was later taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Police found McCulloh still inside the apartment. He was taken to the downtown police station where he was interviewed. Afterward, he taken into custody and brought to the Will County jail, where he remained Friday afternoon.
