Gunfire Strikes Meadow View Elementary: Joliet Police

Monday morning's gunfire happened before the school day started for hundreds of students attending the Plainfield school district building.

JOLIET, IL — The Meadow View Elementary School property in the Plainfield school district continues to be the scene of recurring gunfire. Joliet police issued a news release on Monday announcing that school staff located damage to the building caused by gunfire around 6:35 a.m.

The school is on Mirage Avenue in the Plainfield area of Joliet.

"Officers determined that sometime within the last 24 hours, an exterior and interior window on the west side of the school appeared to have been damaged by gunfire," police spokesman Dwayne English announced. "An interior wall of the school was also struck."

Officers recovered a projectile from the scene and no injuries were reported.

Additional officers arrived at the school and completed an extensive canvas of the neighborhood to gather further information. English said there are no suspects at this time.

On Sunday night, May 15, Joliet police investigated a shooting on the Meadow View property that left a 17-year-old with a gunshot to his leg. Two days later, Joliet police announced the arrest of 16-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez-McSwine at the Plainfield Central High School campus.

Rodriguez-McSwine lives in the 1700 block of Wake Island Drive, which is between Thomas Hickey Drive and Theodore Street on Joliet's west side. According to court records, Rodriguez-McSwine will turn 17 on May 31. He is being charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a gun and three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and his bail remains set at $1 million.
