Here's How Joliet Police Caught 2 U.S. Steel Burglars: Cops

Burglary tools were recovered near the area in the building where Goodwin and Patton were taken into custody, Joliet police announced.

JOLIET, IL — Joliet police officers on regular patrol spotted an unsecured gate on Monday morning at the old U.S. Steel property on Collins Street and that led to the pair of felony arrests for Wilmington 27-year-old Devin Goodwin and his friend Kayla Patton, a 34-year-old Joliet woman from Manhattan Road.

Both Goodwin and Patton were hauled off in handcuffs. The co-defendants are charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal trespass.

According to Joliet police spokesman Olin Torkelson, the following events led to the arrests in the 900 block of Collins Street:

  • An officer conducting a business check on Collins Street saw an unsecured gate leading into the business property.
  • After checking the business grounds, the officer found a white GMC SUV, not authorized to be on-site, parked next to a building on the U.S. Steel property.
  • Officers checked inside the building and found Goodwin and Patton hiding.
  • Both Goodwin and Patton were taken into custody without issue. Burglary tools were also recovered on the scene, near the area inside the building where Goodwin and Patton were taken into custody.
  • Goodwin and Patton were taken to the Joliet Police Department for booking procedures and released to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Patton has been unsuccessful in raising the 10 percent to post as a bond. Her bail is $25,000. Goodwin's bail is double that, at $50,000. The Wilmington man also remained in detention on Thursday.

Kayla Patton comes from the 2800 block of Joliet's Manhattan Road. The 34-year-old woman is being held on a $25,000 bail. Mugshot via Will County Jail
