JOLIET, IL — Last week's Joliet Patch food review column brought you to the east side of Joliet, to a Mexican seafood restaurant near State Street where I ate great tasting octopus, shrimp and fish. This week's review is different. It's not about lunch. It's not about dinner. It's not about steak, it's not about tacos or octopi. It's about breakfast food. It's about Home Cut Donuts.

On Wednesday morning after getting my oil changed, I visited the Home Cut Donuts at 815 Jefferson St. I was relieved when I entered the premises and saw that the place was not sold out. I had heard a lot of hype about these Home Cut Donuts. After all, the business has stood the test of time. Come April 29, Home Cut Donuts will celebrate its 53rd year of business in Joliet.

I settled on an assorted dozen. Many of them will be devoured by my three children once they come home from school today.

My Take: there is no bad time of the day to enjoy delicious tasting donuts, and the ones made at Home Cut Donuts are second to none.

I also ordered a large coffee since I drink my share of coffee.

As far as I'm concerned, the best coffee in Joliet is served downtown at Jitters Coffeehouse, but if you're traveling on the west side of Joliet, you won't go wrong ordering yourself a coffee at Home Cut Donuts. They serve great coffee too.

I do have one regret about my visit to Home Cut Donuts: after I selected my dozen donuts, one of the Home Cut workers put them into a box and taped it shut.

It was around that moment in time when I noticed a couple other rows of donuts: including a blueberry donut and a sour cream donut.

I have never had those before. But it was too late.

I guess I now have another reason to make a return trip to 815 Jefferson St. Of course, if I'm on the east side, there's also a Home Cut Donut at 1317 E. Washington St.

You can't go wrong with Home Cut Donuts. It's a long-time Joliet business that does it right.

"Our homemade donuts have kept our business successful for the past 50 years," its website proudly proclaims.
