How Do you Get the Best Gas Mileage?

The key is in good tire pressure.

The is on the rise. Many of us, though, cannot give up our cars. And, some of us have long commutes that mean even a slight shift in gas prices gouge our budgets. We cannot change how much gas costs. But we can do our part to get the best gas milage possible.

To find out tips and tricks of the trade, we turned to Murt Gazaferi, owner and certified mechanic at , on Chicago Street in . He offered a number of tips, but stressed that the pressure in your tires is the most important thing to help keep your car getting the best gas mileage possible.

"People are using twice as much gas because they have not enough tire pressure," Gazaferi said. "I always tell people; nobody listens to me."

In addition to tire pressure, the best way to get the best gas mileage on the highway is to use cruise control.

"Behind the wheel, using cruise control (to) drastically improved gas mileage," he said. "You're always playing around with the gas pedal and you don’t realize it because you’re so used to it."

In addition to the above suggestions, Gazaferi offers the following tips:

  • Make sure to align your tires - check at least once a year
  • Change your filters - oil, fuel and air. Oil filters should be checked when your oil is changed, fuel filters every 60,000 miles and air filters twice a year.
  • Address your check engine light as soon as it comes on. No matter the cause, whatever is making the light come on is likely has a negative effect on gas mileage.
