I-55 Fatality In Grundy Co: Box Truck Crashes Into Parked Car

The 68-year-old man from Downers Grove was parked on the shoulder of southbound I-55 for unknown reasons at the time of the crash.

DWIGHT, IL — An autopsy was set to take place on Friday at the Grundy County Coroner's Office in Morris after Thursday's late night crash along Interstate 55 between Gardner and Dwight took the life of a 68-year-old Downers Grove man, Thomas Piekarczyk.

Coroner John Callahan reported that his staff pronounced the crash victim dead around 11:40 p.m.

On Thursday night, Piekarczyk had parked his vehicle along the right shoulder of the southbound lane of Interstate 55 for unknown reasons, the coroner noted.

A box truck traveling southbound crashed into the Downers Grove senior citizen's vehicle from behind, pushing the car into the westbound ditch and into a field of corn.

The deadly crash remains under investigation by Callahan’s office and the Illinois State Police. Several area fire departments assisted at the scene, Grundy County officials announced.
