I-80 Death: 66-Year-Old Joliet Woman Identified After Crashing Into Wall Near Des Plaines River Bridge

JOLIET, IL — A woman was killed on Monday afternoon when she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and crashed into a guardrail near the Des Plaines River Bridge over Interstate 80 in Joliet. The Joliet Fire Department said the woman was thrown out of the passenger-side window and landed on the pavement.
On Tuesday morning, the Will County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 66-year-old Joliet resident Lydia Turner Allen. She was pronounced dead at 3:19 p.m. at St. Joe's hospital.
The Joliet Fire Department rushed to the scene and transported the woman by ambulance to St. Joe's Hospital. Only one vehicle was involved in the wreck, authorities told Joliet Patch.

According to Illinois State Police public information officer Genelle Jones, Monday's crash happened at 2:31 p.m. along Interstate 80 eastbound at Chicago Street in Joliet.
A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: ISP Troop 3 units responded to the single-unit fatal crash. A vehicle struck the concrete barrier in the construction zone. The driver was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

All eastbound lanes at Larkin Avenue were shut down at 3:45 p.m. The crash investigation remains active, and there is no further information available at this time, Jones said Monday afternoon.
