“I, Witness” TV Show to Feature Riley Fox Case

Investigation Discovery show to examine the murder case, fight to exonerate father Kevin Fox.

A new Investigation Discovery true crime show will feature the 2004 murder of 3-year-old Riley Fox. An episode of “I, Witness” focusing on Riley, father Kevin Fox and attorney Kathleen Zellner is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 on ID.

According to its website, “I, Witness” invites viewers to “investigate a crime from the personal point of view of someone who intimately experienced it.” The show features dramatizations as well as interviews with real-life witnesses, attorneys and police.

A description for the Jan. 11 episode, titled “The Accused,” reads, “After missing 3-year-old Riley Fox is found murdered, her father, Kevin, confesses to the crime; however, Fox's attorney Kathleen Zellner knows there is more to his confession than meets the eye, and embarks on a mission to set the record straight.”

Kevin Fox was initially charged with his daughter’s June 2004 murder. Under questioning by Will County detectives, Fox confessed to the crime, but was later exonerated through DNA evidence after attorney Zellner pushed to have a private lab test “inconclusive” saliva samples.

In 2010, imprisoned sex offender Scott Eby confessed and was later convicted of Riley’s murder.

The Fox family was ultimately awarded $8 million in a civil rights suit filed against Will County authorities.

Zellner is known for taking on high-profile cases and working to exonerate the wrongly prosecuted. She currently represents Steven Avery, the subject of the Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer.” Avery, of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, was released in 2003 after spending nearly two decades in prison for a wrongful rape conviction, only to be charged with the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Zellner said her goal is to vacate Avery’s 2007 murder conviction.

“I, Witness” airs Wednesdays on Investigation Discovery.
