Izzy's Murder Defendant Wants His 4 Meds: Bretz

Court records indicate that Patrick Gleason was captured on video killing bartender Danny Rios.

JOLIET, IL - Murder defendant Patrick Gleason has been in police custody since March 9. That was when several of the Izzy's Bar patrons took him to the ground seconds after Gleason killed bartender Danny Rios, according to court records. Since he was taken into custody, Gleason made it clear to others that he wanted the services of downtown Joliet lawyer, Chuck Bretz, as his legal representation. The court has obliged and allowed Gleason's temporary guardian to spend about $42,000 to hire Bretz to defend him on the murder charges and to fight efforts by the State's Attorney's Office to seize his vehicle.

Now, the latest legal filing at the Will County Courthouse comes from Bretz. He has filed what's known as a motion for an order.

Before Gleason's arrest, the defendant "was prescribed medications that are important for his continued health ... the following list of medications are most important for the defendant's ongoing treatment," Bretz's filing states.

  2. Trazodone, generic for Desyrel, depression, anxiety and insomnia medication.
  3. Phenobarbital, generic for Luminal, sleep assistance medication.
  4. Pioglitazone, generic for Actos, diabetes medication.

"The defendant, Patrick Gleason, respectfully requests that this honorable court enter an order ... to allow the defendant to be given his medications for the reasons stated above and for such other and further relief as this court deems equitable and proper," Bretz wrote the court in his filing.
