JCHS Culinary Arts and Tech. CAD Students Combine Talents to Create Steelman Cookie Cutter with 3D Printer

Technical/Computer-Aided Drafting and Culinary Art students combined their talents to create the first ever Steelman cookie cutter.

Joliet Central High School Technical/Computer-Aided Drafting and Culinary Art students combined their talents to create the first ever Steelman cookie cutter.

JCHS junior, Alejandro Gonzales, designed and modeled the cookie cutter using three dimensional software. He then sent his design to the state-of-the-art 3D printer.

3D printers are used in various industries for prototypes, prosthetics and a variety of other functions. In the classroom, students can now see their design go from a two dimensional drawing, to a three dimensional model, and then to a three dimensional object.

After the Steelman cookie cutter was printed using the 3D printer, Culinary Art student and JCHS senior and pastry chef Esias Grant used the cookie cutter to make sweet Steelman cookies. The project was put together by Culinary Arts Instructor Rochelle Bjelland and Tech. CAD Instructor Dale West.

“Rochelle had the idea of 3D printing a Steelman cookie. I loved the idea and I put Alejandro on the project the next day. After we 3D printed the cookie cutter, we gave it to Rochelle and her student made the cookies,” said West.
