Joliet Burglar Tries Cooking Meal On Victim's Stove: Police

Joliet police say they earned that the homeowner on Duncan Street arrived home to find the back door kicked in and damaged.

JOLIET, IL — Joliet police say Friday's early morning residential burglary was thwarted by the actions of the homeowner, who came home and found someone trying to cook food inside.

Now, 44-year-old Richard Redmond is lodged in the Will County Jail, where he's charged with residential burglary.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said the incident happened around 12:45 a.m. on Friday in the 200 block of Duncan Street.

According to English, these arrests led to Redmond's arrest:

  • Officers learned that the homeowner arrived home to find the back door kicked in and damaged. The homeowner also determined that someone had tried to cook food in the kitchen.
  • While the homeowner was in the house, Redmond emerged from a bedroom and asked the homeowner to not call the police before fleeing the area. Redmond was spotted near Water Street and Duncan Street and was placed into custody without incident.

Redmond comes from the 700 block of South Des Plaines Street, which is in proximity to where the burglary happened. His bail was set at $80,000. This marks his fourth incarceration at the Will County Jail since June of 2020.
