Joliet Councilman Jim McFarland Investigated Over Envelope Use
McFarland has since apologized for his actions and offered to repay the cost of the envelopes used.

Joliet Councilman Jim McFarland is being investigated over allegations that he used city envelopes for political events.
In McFarland’s official Facebook page as city councilman, he apologized for his actions.
“Please accept my apologies. I failed to act carefully,” McFarland said in the post. “I used City branded envelopes to send out letters for the Veterans Day breakfast and Joliet Area Lost Pet mailers- not thinking these letters would be construed as personally political. Upon reflection, I realize the lines are blurred and I should have erred on the side of caution. I made a mistake and have offered to pay for my error.”

Supporters of McFarland declared their outrage over the investigation, often citing that the city had better things to focus on.
“This is ridiculous and unbelievable! With everything that is happening in this city, this is what they are focusing on? Anyone that knows you Jim, knows you did not intentionally use those envelopes for your own personal gain,” said Madonna L. Stover. “Thank you for all that you do for Joliet.”

The councilman’s Facebook page had many comments echoing similar statements.
“This is absurd! There is so much more going (on) to be concerned about or question then this,” wrote Kim Zalinksy. “(You) do so much for the community. And they are worried about envelopes! Wow.”
Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and City Manager Jim Hock told The Herald-News they couldn’t comment on the issue due it being discussed in closed session.
