Joliet Man Busted for Receiving Guns Stolen in Burglary: Police

The guns were taken in a break-in allegedly committed by Christian Nelson's friend, who's been charged with burglary, the Crest Hill police chief said.

A Joliet man who helped a friend burglarize a Crest Hill auto repair business over the Labor Day weekend has been arrested, Crest Hill Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said.

Christian D. Nelson, 19, of 1426 N. William, was taken into custody Tuesday after his friend, 21-year-old Theopolies R. Sloan, of 20500 Kingsbrook, Crest Hill, implicated him as receiving guns stolen in the burglary, Wilkerson said.

Wilkerson said the repair shop, located in the 500 block of Pasadena Avenue, was broken into Saturday.

Credit for solving the case goes to a resident who called police to say they'd seen someone in the area who didn't look like he should be there, and later called back to say he'd seen the suspect again and to provide details on where to find him, the chief said.

"He was very in tune with his neighborhood and knew when somebody looked like they didn't belong," Wilkerson said. "It was great for us to have him continue to (be on the lookout) and call us when he saw (Sloan) again."

Sloan was interviewed, admitted his role in the break-in and identified his friend, Nelson, as the person who drove him to and from the site, Wilkerson said.

Sloan gave Nelson two guns he stole from the shop, he said.

Nelson has been charged with possession of stolen firearms. He is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.

Sloan is also being held in jail in lieu of $25,000 bond. In addition to the burglary, he was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court for a July arrest on a criminal trespass to land charge. Bond in that case is $2,500.
