Joliet Man Crashes Into Tree, Runs Away and Attacks Officers: Police

Joliet police responded to the intersection of Black Road and North Larkin Avenue for a single-vehicle traffic crash.

JOLIET, IL — A 21-year-old Joliet man remains in the Will County Jail after crashing into a tree, running away and later attacking one of the Joliet police officers who came to arrest him, according to Joliet police reports.

A resident of the 900 block of Lois Place apartments, Michael King is charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, obstructing justice, obstructing identification and resisting a peace officer.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, the following events led to King's incarceration:

  • On March 29, around 11:40 p.m., Joliet police were sent to a one-vehicle traffic crash at Black Road and Larkin Avenue.
  • The Traverse was southbound on North Larkin Avenue approaching Black Road at which time the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree on the west side of the street.
  • Officers found a Chevrolet Traverse was in a crash on North Larkin Avenue north of Black Road, but the driver had run off.
  • Officers identified the driver as King and learned that he was in a nearby apartment in the 900 block of Lois Place.
  • When King was found inside his Lois Place apartment, he provided Joliet police with a false name. Officers placed King into custody after confirming his identity.
  • King became belligerent with officers and flailed his body while being escorted to a squad car. While officers were placing King in a squad car, he elbowed an officer in the arm.
  • King was transported to the Joliet Police Department, where he refused to cooperate with processing procedures.
  • King also received citations for driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of open alcohol by driver, improper lane usage, and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.

Bail for King was set at $15,000, he remained in custody on Monday, unable the post the necessary 10 percent.
