Joliet Man Knifes Two During Fight, Police Say

A Joliet man who allegedly stabbed a woman in the back four times as she tried to break up a fight between him and another man was charged with two counts of aggravated battery Tuesday.

The fight occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at 14 W. Jefferson St., just outside the Will County Courthouse, Joliet Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Officers called to the scene found a "slightly intoxicated" man with a stab wound who said he was cut by an "enemy," he said.

Shortly thereafter, Joliet police were called about a woman saying she, too, had been stabbed, Demick said. She identified Michael D. Smith, 49, of 323 N. Briggs Ave., as the man who inflicted her wounds; police located him in the area of Cass and Scott streets and took him into custody Tuesday night.

The woman told officers Smith and the male victim had gotten into an argument during which Smith pulled out a knife, Demick said. When she attempted to intervene, she said, Smith slashed her back four times, Demick said.

Both victims were taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for treatment. Details about of the male victim's wound were not available Wednesday.

There also was no information available on what motivated the fight, Demick said.

Smith is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $60,000 bond.
