Joliet Rejects Huge Liquor Store Planned For Jefferson Street

The proposed Joliet Market faced vehement opposition from Basinger's Pharmacy.

JOLIET, IL - At Tuesday night's meeting, the Joliet City Council followed the advice of city staff and rejected a Thaer Jbara's proposal to open a 12,000-square-foot liquor store called the Joliet Market. Jbara wanted to put his business at 2155 West Jefferson Street. Mayor and Liquor Commissioner Bob O'Dekirk and City Manager David Hales had urged the denial of a Class C liquor license for this location.

The Joliet Market needed a Class C liquor license to open at its desired location, across from the Marycrest Shopping Plaza. However, Connie Sondag of Basinger's Pharmacy and Tom Knorr of Sidelines bar, addressed Joliet's Liquor Commission months ago, strongly urging the city to turn down the venture.

Moving forward, if Jbara still wants to open his liquor store around Joliet, Tuesday's action by the City Council means he will have to find another location elsewhere in the city.
