Joliet Teen Dies During Jackson Street Shooting

The Will County Coroner's Office told Patch that an autopsy was being performed Wednesday in connection with Joliet's latest violent death.

JOLIET, IL —Another teenager was fatally shot this week in Joliet, the Joliet Police Department has confirmed. The city's latest gun homicide occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Jackson Street. The 17-year-old shooting victim, Abraham Vertiz, was driven to the AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he died from his gunshots, according to police. Joliet Fire Department's told Patch that it did not transport Vertiz to the hospital.

Tuesday's shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. No arrests have been made.

There have been several homicides and suspicious deaths during July in the Joliet area.

Joliet police responded to a shooting on Sunday at 10:16 a.m. near a house on the corner of Ottawa and Munroe Streets. Pedro Zabala was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old boy lived in Romeoville. Jimmy Baker, 18, of Joliet, has been charged with four felonies in connection with Pedro's death. Will County prosecutors revealed in court Tuesday that Pedro fired his gun first, prompting Baker to return the gunfire, killing him.

July 13

The Crest Hill Police Department responded to a fatal shooting in the 1700 block of Arbor Lane apartments. The shooting victim was Trayvon C. Frazier, 16, of Jackson, Tennessee. Crest Hill police arrested Travion Terrell on two felonies: reckless discharge of a gun and involuntary manslaughter.

July 13

The body of Joliet resident Jaheim "JT" Terry, 18, was discovered in a field near Zarley Boulevard and Cecilia Avenue in unincorporated Joliet Township. Terry was last seen a week earlier in Joliet. The Will County Sheriff's Office is investigating Terry's case as a suspicious death.

July 9

At 7:52 p.m., Joliet police officers responded to a deadly shooting in the 200 block of Lincoln Street. On the porch, officers found Vonta Perry, a 24-year-old Joliet man suffering multiple gunshots.
