Joliet West Teacher Selected as Golden Apple Finalist
The finalists, selected from a pool of over 400 nominations, represent high school teachers throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

Joliet West High School Director of Vocal Music Tim DeBoer was recently selected as one of 30 finalists for the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching, according to a press release from Joliet Township High School.

"I am humbled and excited to have been chosen as a Golden Apple finalist," DeBoer said in the release. "I am grateful for the tremendously talented students in the choral program at Joliet West who make coming to work and making music a rewarding experience each and every day."

Since 1989, Golden Apple has recognized outstanding teachers throughout Illinois each year. Created by founders Mike and Pat Koldyke, the Golden Apple Awarts for Excellence in Teaching recognize and honor outstanding teachers for their role in building a stronger, better-educated society, according to the release. The 30 finalists will participate in a final round of review and observations prior to the announcement of the ten recipients in May.
DeBoer began his career at Joliet Township High School in 2003. In 2004, DeBoer established the Opera Scenes program, which is nearly unprecedented among high schools, the release said. His teaching can be seen within the numerous honors earned by the Joliet West choirs throughout the years.

Golden Apple award recipients receive public television recognition, a $5,000 cash award and a tuition-free, spring quarter sabbatical to study at Northwestern University. Recipients also become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, giving them a stronger voice and a larger stage from which to address improving the education experience of children.
